Biology Laboratory Safety

The Henry Ford Community College Science Department has set minimum safety requirements for all laboratory courses. 

Clothing Policy

  • Shoes.  Shoes should be worn at all times in Science Labs.  They need to have solid covering from toe to heel.  Sandals and slippers are not appropriate. 
  • Attire.  Clothing should cover at a minimum from the torso down to the knees.
  • Students must have proper shoes and attire to remain in the laboratory.

Safety Glasses

  • Students must wear safety glasses in labs in which chemicals are being used. 
  • Safety glasses will be provided and will be stored in a bin in each laboratory. 
  • Signs in the lab will indicate this is a day safety glasses must be worn.
  • Students will take the safety glasses and sanitize the glasses with alcohol wipes provided before use. 
  • At the end of the laboratory, students will return safety glasses to bin. 
  • Safety glasses are required even if a student wears glasses or contacts

Book Bags/Back-packs

  • All book bags and back-packs must be placed in a designated area, typically under bench or near coat racks.

Housekeeping

  • Students are required to leave their work areas clean and put away all materials before leaving the lab. 
  • Students must wash their hands before leaving the lab when hazardous materials are in use. 

Food/Drink in labs

  • Food and drink (including gum, cough drops and candy) are strictly prohibited in all lab rooms at all times whether or not lab is in session
  • Students should not apply cosmetics in lab.  This also includes chapstick and hand lotion.
