Associate of Applied Science in Biotechnology

If you haven't yet earned a degree, you can apply for the Associate of Applied Science in Biotechnology.  This two-year program will prepare you for a career as a technician in the biotechnology industry, or to transfer to a four-year college or university.


What skills will I learn?

•  Perform the functions of entry-level biotechnology technicians in molecular biology laboratories.
•  Demonstrate proficiency with  the following techniques:
protein isolation from crude tissue production of recombinant protein protein isolation form a recombinant source
protein quantiation centrifugation chromatography (ion-exchange, size exclusion,  affinity)
enzyme activity analysis ELISA fluorescence spectroscopy
UV/Vis spectroscopy protein stability analysis DNA and RNA isolation from cells
nucleic acid quantification restriction endonuclease digestion insertion of genes into plasmid vectors
genetic transformation PCR nucleic acid hybridization
aseptic handling of microbes sterilization electrophoresis

•  Prepare, dispense, and appropriately label reagents; maintain reagent integrity.
•  Use, calibrate, and maintain standard laboratory equipment
•  Perform statistical analysis of data
•  Follow, analyze, and revise laboratory protocols for SOPs, demonstrate GLPs, and understand GMPs
•  Communicate professionally
•  Troubleshoot laboratory problems
•  Demonstrate lab safety skills
•  Demonstrate scientific accountability and ethical behavior
•  Follow documentation requirements
•  Follow regulations

What are the prerequisites?
You must have a command of  algebra sufficient to allow you to place into at least MATH 110 and command of English sufficient to place into ENG 131.  You should also have had sufficient biology and chemistry to be able to place into BIO 152 and CHEM 141.
